An Open Letter to Salesforce: Drop Your Contract with CBP
Last week, one of the largest consulting and management firms in the world cut ties with ICE. McKinsey and Company showed just how easy it is to stay true to its values. McKinsey’s contract did not deal directly with immigration enforcement but the company still took a stance stating they, “will not, under any circumstances, engage in any work, anywhere in the world, that advances or assists policies that are at odds with our values.”
McKinsey’s move to cancel their ICE contract comes amid growing outcry over company’s contracts with ICE, including more than 100,000 people signing petitions and participating in-person protests at Salesforce, Amazon, and Northeastern University.
Meanwhile, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, has claimed since the company’s contract with CBP does not deal directly with activities at the US-Mexico border, Salesforce will not drop their contract.
32 organizations who are Salesforce customers, including Fight for the Future, Greenpeace International, Free Press, and The Icarus Project have signed an open letter to Benioff urging him to drop the contract with CBP.
Dear Mr. Benioff,
We are nonprofits, startups, and businesses that are Salesforce’s customers or potential customers.
The tools that Salesforce provides helps us achieve our mission. However, we are absolutely appalled that Salesforce is providing assistance to government agencies that are violating human rights and is refusing to drop the contract with Customs and Border Protection. We cannot, in good conscience, ignore this issue.
We have seen that Salesforce has spoken out against the government’s inhumane practice of separating and detaining children. However, as long as Salesforce keeps its contracts with Customs and Border Protection, they are still enabling the agency to violate human rights.
If every tech company that has any kind of contract with these immigration agencies, immediately cut their contracts, it would make a huge impact and create enormous political pressure for these human rights abuses to end.
Mr. Benioff, we know you really personally care about these issues and we implore you to listen to your conscience and show that you really care about immigrant families. As Salesforce customers and potential customers, we urge you to cut your contract with Customs and Border Protection. We will not be quiet until you do.
